5C Focus: Competency - 1
Theme: Three keys for learning how to study the Bible (Observation, Interpretation, Application)
Audience: High school students
group = 3 people
1. (group) Write down the names of the books of the Bible in order within 3 minutes.
2. (individual) Observe the painting ( I am using The Return of the Prodigal by Rembrandt ) write down all that you observe. Think like a CSI agent/detective
3. (group) Ask the who, what, when, why. where, how questions and have someone record your observations. Discuss observations with everyone back together.
4. (individual/group) Now, do the same with Psalm 1. Write down all that you observe and try to write a title or theme for the Psalm. Contrast and compare the blessed man with the ungodly. What do you learn? Share your answers with the entire group.
5. (Group) In your group share your discoveries and work on an outline for the Psalm together. Give a report to all.
6. (Group) Now let’s do some interpretation work. Key idea for interpretation: Never take a verse out of the context. What do you not understand from this passage? Write it down and see if you can find other verses that might give you insight. What intrigues you or surprises you from this passage? Use a language reference book (provided) to look up words and phrases.
7. (Individual) Now apply the Word: What do you learn about God and you in this passage? What part of the passage do you want to meditate on this week?
